Ben Templesmith talks about Singularity 7.In July, IDW will publish Singularity 7, a series created and written by Ben Templesmith, who's already well known for his art skills on books like 30 Days of Night and Silent Hill. Since he hasn't written for comics before, we talke

IDW: Ben, you're well known for your brilliant art on several IDW titles. Have you been interested in stretching your wings as a writer for a long time?

Ben Templesmith: Kinda. I've always wanted to actually do the whole package deal. Then I got a break in comics solely as an artist, which was great, since I am more an artist than a writer; that's certainly the perception. I guess the art side just stuck more. I love that, but there's always a bit of me that wants to have complete control over the storytelling, the pacing and whatnot, to see where I can push myself. I don't think I'd ever write for another artist, though. It's not that sort of deal for me.

IDW: What can we expect in Singularity 7?

BT: Elements of a lot of things, I guess. There's going to be a heavy technological bent to it. Nanotechnology in particular is a fun area to play in. There are a lot of possibilities. There'll be kind of a traditional-mixed-with-the-future aspect to it all, I hope. People will use swords, for instance... but they won't just be swords. There'll be a reason why they can be used instead of a gun, say... technologically speaking.

There'll be lots of character interaction and such, as that'll be the root of the story, really... and questioning what's really right or wrong.

IDW: Will there be other stories told in the world of Singularity 7?

BT: Hmmm, I guess there could be. But I'm treating it as one large stand-alone story of a bit over 100 pages. Split into 4 chapters, for now.

IDW: Any other projects you'd like to write after this one?

BT: I think I'm happy just getting the opportunity to do what I do for now... I'll take each step as it comes. S7 takes me up to the middle of the year pretty much, though I'm still finishing Return to Barrow too... so maybe after S7 I'll just take a little nap... and see what the boss thinks!
